Assignments
Classes and Readings
Each of the below scheduled classes will include either a self-directed PowerPoint module in
Canvas or a class discussion via Zoom. The modules are located in Canvas/Files/Class PowerPoint
Modules.
Note that all times listed below are Eastern Time. Be sure to calculate correct times if you are not in
the Eastern Time Zone.
You must complete all readings by the dates indicated. Note that the Korom and Chelkowski article
on Muharram (Hosay) in Trinidad is no longer required.
Requirement for Completing Class PowerPoint Modules:
Complete module and send an email to [email protected] by 3:45 pm on the designated day.
Your email must include: 1) a two or three sentence response to one study question in the module;
and 2) a question of your own about the module and/or assigned reading. Study questions in
modules are indicated with an asterisk (*).
Requirement for Participating in Zoom Discussions:
Remain logged in to the Zoom meeting from 2:30 to 3:45 pm on the designated day and participate
in the discussion. If you are having technical difficulties with a Zoom connection, email me in
advance. I will arrange an alternative written assignment for you, which will be due the following
day at 3:45 pm.
Class Attendance Policy:
Class attendance will consist of submission of an email after completing a Class PowerPoint
Module, participating in a Zoom Discussion, or (if necessary) completing an alternative written
assignment. These requirements will be subject to the attendance policy stated on page 5 of the
original course syllabus. You are entitled to two unexcused absences for the whole semester. I will
deduct 5 points from your final grade for each unexcused absence after the first two.

Research Paper and Research Presentation
There are several changes to requirements for the research process, the Research Paper, the
Research Presentation (PowerPoint), and the due date. For instructions, see the document titled
“Research Project Revised Assignment†in Canvas/Files. Your paper and PowerPoint presentation
are due as email attachments to [email protected] by Monday, 04/20, at 3:45 pm.
Final Exam
The Final Exam will have a take-home, open-book format and will consist of short-answer
questions and short essays. The exam will cover readings and class PowerPoint modules from 03/30
through 04/22, as well as readings and lectures from 01/15 through 02/03. I will post the exam,
titled “Final Exam,†in Canvas/Files after class on 04/29.
You must submit the Final Exam as an email attachment to [email protected] by Monday,
05/04, at 3:45 pm.
